Does liquid chlorine corrode stainless steel, such as 316? Thank you!
I don’t think so; there are no chloride ions in liquid chlorine
There is no corrosion; 316L is completely fine.
I plan to use a double-eccentric valve, with the valve body and valve disc both made of 316 material, and the valve itself made of PTFE. I just don’t have any experience, so I’m not sure about it.
By using a fully lined PTFE butterfly valve, there’s no need to worry about chloride ions. :lol
For safety reasons, it is recommended to use Hastelloy C alloy. We have experience using it
There are specialized valves for liquid chlorine; materials such as 316 are not required – ordinary materials will suffice. A search on Baidu will reveal many manufacturers that specialize in producing valves for liquid chlorine, most of which are globe valves

As long as it is liquid chlorine, most of what you mentioned applies; however, it’s important to prevent leaks and to pay attention to the purity of the liquid chlorine. It is recommended to use fluoropolymer-lined valves – for straight-stroke valves, diaphragm seals are suitable, while they aren’t necessary for angle-stroke valves
The material used for liquid chlorine media depends on the water content in the liquid chlorine; the higher the water content, the greater its corrosiveness. The liquid chlorine produced by large enterprises is generally well controlled; 316 stainless steel can be used when the concentration is below 80PPM, while fluorocarbon-lined or Hastelloy materials should be considered when the concentration exceeds this value. Fluorinated valves are affected by pressure and temperature; the nominal pressure of their valve bodies is at most 150 LB, which means that the pressure of the medium should be around 1.0 MPA, otherwise it will affect their lifespan. Fluorinated valves use PFA lining; they can operate at temperatures below 100 degrees, with temporary temperatures up to 120 degrees, but higher temperatures cannot be guaranteed.
For liquid chlorine valves, carbon steel is sufficient; stainless steel is not necessary. Using Har B and C valves for liquid chlorine is nothing but a waste of money; it will also make others laugh at you
