Everyone is familiar with the five essential safety accessories for pressure vessels. However, none of the reflux tanks in gas separation units are equipped with shut-off valves. Is this a viable approach from a design perspective, in order to save costs and avoid potential leaks due to gasket failure?
Let me ask, what risks might this cut-off valve pose to the return tank?
Safety comes first; without these safety features, there are significant risks to the operation of the equipment. The design of the equipment should ensure safety, ease of operation, and low cost, but safety is of primary importance.
If an emergency water injection line is added, water can be injected into that tank in case of a leak, allowing the water from the leak point to flow out while measures are taken to address it. Is this a viable approach?
Since the specific conditions and usage of the tank are unknown, it is not possible to help the original poster determine a solution. But it’s still best to install a shut-off valve
The design institute replied that it is not necessary to include it, as there is already a valve at the pump inlet; this is equivalent to the cut-off valve of the tank being moved downward (in other words, it’s like a very long spool). Note: This applies only to large pipelines
There’s nothing else to do then. But it doesn’t matter; as long as there are no problems, that’s fine. If problems do arise, the design should be checked first – if the design is unreasonable, the responsibility lies entirely with the design institute
The original intention of design is for practical use; it is not acceptable to sacrifice safety in order to reduce costs – costs can only be reduced while ensuring safety
