Can ball valves be used for low-pressure steam pipes? I’m confused about two pipes: one is for condensate water inlet and the other is for low-pressure steam; it’s difficult to tell them apart. One of these pipes is equipped with a globe valve while the other has a stop valve. Can the type of valve be used to distinguish between the two pipes?
Ball valves cannot be used in low-pressure steam pipelines because their PTFE seals cannot withstand steam temperatures. The condensate water inlet can barely be controlled with a ball valve. This way, you can distinguish between the two pipes.
Ball valves can be made of stainless steel, which allows them to withstand high steam temperatures. I’ve seen examples of ball valves being used in low-pressure steam pipelines!
Stainless steel ones can be used, but it depends on the occasion; they are quite rare though.
Is it difficult to tell the difference between the two pipes on site? It is not appropriate to use valves on the pipes to distinguish between them. Generally, ball valves are not used for low-pressure steam pipelines, and they are also usually not used in condensate water pipelines. On-site, it is better to trace the pipes to find their sources; relying solely on valves to differentiate between these two types of pipes is not suitable.

Use globe valves for low-pressure steam, and ball valves for condensate water. Low-pressure steam pipes need to be insulated, while condensate water pipes should be painted green – this way they can be distinguished from each other.

How could one think of using valves to separate pipes? That’s simply unreasonable. Ball valves are not recommended for steam lines, as the valves in such systems wear out quickly; it’s likely that the valve discs will become ineffective even after just a year of use. Which medium is used in that process? It’s necessary to go through the process several times; one should keep that in mind. It’s not enough to just remember the valves in one’s head – it takes too much effort
