Liquid sulfur pipelines usually come equipped with jackets; the outer layer contains heating steam at 0.35 MPa, while the inner tube holds liquid sulfur. May I ask what pressure the liquid sulfur can withstand in this pipeline? Pipeline connections are generally made using flange connections, and asbestos gaskets are employed; what pressure can asbestos gaskets withstand?
It depends on the location; for the pump outlet of a liquid sulfur pipeline, a pressure of around 1-2 Mpa is generally acceptable. Most pumps are designed with an outlet pressure of around 0.8 Mpa, though there are also exceptions. The design pressure at the condenser outlet should be a bit lower, but a normal pressure of a few kilograms is fine; what’s important is the gasket you use. Asbestos gaskets are not recommended for liquid sulfur lines, as they tend to cause leaks. Especially at the pump outlet, metal gaskets are recommended. Of course, the price is high too.
Are there also metal gaskets for jacket flanges?

It is best to use metal wound gaskets, as they can meet the pressure requirements while also being durable and leak-proof.
This depends on the distance over which the medium in the pipeline is transported. The outlet of the flow condenser is generally at atmospheric pressure, while self-circulation pipelines and pipelines for transporting the fluid to external locations need to have a pressure level that is sufficient to meet the requirements of the pump’s head. Gaskets should be selected based on the pressure level, as long as they meet the necessary requirements.
The pressure is not high; the main consideration is selecting materials that are resistant to sulfur and hydrogen sulfide corrosion.
What is a liquid sulfur pipeline, please?
It turns out that the connection flanges on the liquid sulfur pipeline used to be jacketed flanges, which required asbestos gaskets; if these gaskets were damaged, it could lead to mixing of steam and liquid sulfur. However, the new design does not use jacketed flanges with holes. Instead, the flange surface is enlarged and welded to the sleeve, with short pipes used to connect the steam from the jacket tube. This allows for the use of metal wound gaskets, thereby improving reliability and reducing the risk of leaks.

Jacket flanges are rarely used; what we use now is what you mentioned – larger flanges, with both the jacket tube and the liquid sulfur pipeline welded to those flanges. Joints between the two jackets are connected using bridging elements, which is why we use wound gaskets for sealing… The pressure for the hydrostatic test is 0.5 MPa. During hydrotesting, the pressure that asbestos gaskets can withstand is 1.6 Mpa
