The wastewater generated by latex product factories during production processes has a very low C/N ratio; its COD level is between 200 and 300, ammonia nitrogen levels range from 50 to 100, and total nitrogen levels are 200. There is almost no inorganic nitrogen present (the remaining amount must be organic nitrogen). Biological treatment methods such as A/O can only remove part of the COD and total nitrogen, but it is difficult to eliminate the organic nitrogen in this wastewater. Currently, the discharge standards for this industry set a limit of 15 for total nitrogen. As a supplementary note, the raw material is natural latex; preservatives such as ammonia water need to be added during the production process. When the production line is operating at full capacity, the ammonia nitrogen level can reach 120, while the total nitrogen level reaches 200

Regarding your question, I suggest the following methods; you might want to give them a try: 1. Add some nitrifying bacteria and nitrosifying bacteria; 2. Add some sodium hypochlorite (add it later, otherwise it will kill the bacteria) ; Our facility also had high ammonia nitrogen levels before, and after these treatments, the effect was very noticeable.
Thank you for your reply. I can deal with ammonia nitrogen using various methods, but the current issue is how to remove organic nitrogen other than ammonia nitrogen – that part which is the difference between total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen
Organic nitrogen can first be subjected to hydrolytic acidification treatment, which converts some large-molecule substances into smaller ones, making them easier to be decomposed by microorganisms. In most cases, organic nitrogen can be converted into inorganic nitrogen through hydrolytic acidification, and then nitrogen can be removed via nitrification and denitrification processes. However, your total nitrogen level is around 200, which is somewhat high; it will be difficult to reduce it to 15 levels using the A/O process.
Our company has encountered similar problems to yours; in our case, the issue was caused by a leak in the MDEA solution, which resulted in higher levels of ammonia nitrogen at the outlet compared to the inlet level (organic nitrogen was released in the form of ammonia nitrogen after treatment). The problem was resolved only after addressing the source of the leak. If your water volume does not meet the design specifications, you might consider increasing the recirculation rate. Based on our experience, ammonia nitrogen levels can be kept around 100, COD levels around 20, and the ammonia nitrogen level in the effluent can be reduced to below 10 ppm.

To ensure that the total nitrogen level meets the required standards, the only option is to control the amount of carbon source added. In typical projects, what kinds of carbon sources are used for denitrification? There’s cheap flour available, as well as glucose and methanol. Some studies suggest that the denitrification rate with methanol is 4 times higher than that with glucose. Could the moderator provide some advice?
