Overall design and preliminary design

Dear colleagues, for the overall design of projects, the \"SHSG-050-2008 Regulations on the Content of Overall Design for Large-scale Petrochemical Construction Projects\" are currently being followed; for the preliminary design, the \"HGT 20688-2000 Regulations on the Depth of Content in Preliminary Design Documents for Chemical Plants\" apply. In addition, there are also the \"SHSG-033-2008 Regulations on the Content of Foundation Design for Petrochemical Units\". So what is the relationship and difference between overall design and preliminary design? I would appreciate your guidance; the more detailed, the better.

If the residential complex is a single high-rise building, a preliminary design is sufficient; however, if the complex consists of high-rises, townhouses, detached houses, and other types of buildings, not only is a preliminary design for each individual building required, but also an overall plan for the entire complex. The overall design is the sum of all the individual preliminary designs (or basic designs). \"Basic design\" is the term used abroad, while \"preliminary design\" is the term used in China; the two are essentially the same. The depth of basic design is slightly greater than that of preliminary design, with the preliminary design including an additional \"third set of elements\".

The examples of developing residential complexes are very appropriate; however, the overall design is not simply the sum of the individual preliminary designs. It is developed prior to those preliminary designs, and its level of detail is less than that of the preliminary designs. The outcomes of the overall design include the planar locations of each individual building, the interface conditions between them, as well as unified design specifications. Only after evaluation can the various design firms proceed with the preliminary designs based on this overall design plan. In terms of design responsibilities, there is usually one main design institute whose scope of work includes the supporting systems such as the external piping for the entire plant.
