Why can’t heating furnaces be heated with coke or coal, and why is it necessary to strictly control the sulfur content? Does sulfur cause severe contamination of nickel?
Nickel and nickel alloys possess excellent corrosion resistance, but they are prone to corrosion and embrittlement in high-temperature sulfur-containing gases, resulting in sulfur embrittlement. Moreover, this sulfur embrittlement phenomenon is irreversible. Nickel and nickel alloys that suffer from sulfur embrittlement can only be scrapped.
