As the title suggests: Why are anti-surge plates installed in distillation towers? What is its function, and where should it be installed?
A baffle is installed, with openings in the negative pressure area behind it to allow air flow to pass more easily; its main purpose is to prevent liquids from exerting excessive force on the equipment inside the tower
There are generally three locations in a distillation column where anti-foaming baffles are installed: 1. At the column feed point, to reduce impact on the tray plates and minimize mist entrainment. 2. At the column outlet, to prevent vortex formation and reduce cavitation in the pump. 3. At the liquid phase outlet leading to the reboiler, to reduce vortex formation. These suggestions are provided for discussion.
Then why don’t some towers have impact shields?
The reasons may be as follows: 1. The designer failed to consider things thoroughly and made omissions; 2. The absorption tower is a packed tower, and generally no anti-backflow baffles are installed.
Taking our tower as an example: 1. Our FCC stabilizer tower is a standard distillation tower with 4 overflow float valves; on some trays, anti-overflow plates are installed. Upon on-site inspection, it was found that these anti-overflow plates are mounted on the outside of the downcomers and are welded there. 2. The stripping tower is similar to the stabilizer tower in terms of having 4 overflow float valves, but it does not have any anti-overflow plates
