I have a question for the more experienced colleagues: For a centrifugal pump operating with carbon-14 as the medium, and using the sealing scheme specified in API682 – Plan 11 + Plan 52 – should the liquid in the seal fluid buffer tank be carbon-14 or lubricating oil? What is the basis for consideration? Thank you~
Carbon-14 cannot be used. Lubricants such as grease or white oil should be used – liquids that have lubricating properties, are not volatile, and are harmless. The purpose of PLAN52 itself is to prevent hazardous substances from entering the atmosphere directly in the event of a leak; if the substance itself is used as an isolation fluid, then its purpose is lost.
What was said upstairs is correct; C14 has high volatility and is not suitable as a flushing fluid for mechanical seals. Generally speaking, white oil has stable properties, a moderate price, and no conflicts with C14, making it a more suitable choice.
What are the components of white oil?
It’s paraffin oil, right? It is obtained from the high-boiling-point (330°C–390°C) fractions of petroleum distillation, namely the lubricating oil fractions, after undergoing treatments such as dewaxing, carbonization, neutralization, and treatment with activated clay. It is a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons, whose main components are mixtures of n-alkanes with molecular formulas ranging from C16H34 to C21H44.
