I work in electrical engineering; I asked those in charge of power distribution, but they don’t know what’s going on either. Sometimes, after a thunderstorm, some of the pumps in the factory stop working, though they can be restarted later. Was it because of a lightning strike on the power lines? Then why have only individual devices stopped?
Production lines experience widespread contactor tripping issues due to instantaneous voltage drops or power outages in the power supply system, caused by lightning strikes, short circuits, reclosing operations, and similar events. Since the duration of voltage fluctuations is usually very short (0.1 seconds or even less), some devices are not sensitive to such fluctuations, either because they have automatic restart mechanisms or because they are not connected to that circuit, so they do not stop working.
This phenomenon is known as surging electricity. In areas where thunderstorms are frequent, such phenomena tend to occur. When thunder strikes, the power grid is subjected to high voltage from the lightning, which causes some of the devices within the system to activate their protection mechanisms and trigger tripping, resulting in the shutdown of the equipment on site; In some areas, the lower configuration of the power supply system is to blame; when a fault occurs in one of the output circuits within the same substation or on the same bus, it causes fluctuations in the voltage across the power grid, which in turn leads to adjustments being made to the power equipment in other output circuits within the system ; The main countermeasures currently in use are: 1. Static compensation devices 2. DC-BACK devices
