During the first initial startup of a WSA wet sulfuric acid production plant, a \"catalyst sulfur absorption\" process must be carried out. I consulted engineers from the company that holds the patents for this startup process, but they were unable to explain what kind of reaction takes place during sulfuration – is it physical adsorption or a chemical reaction? I would be extremely grateful for any guidance from those who are well-informed. Our catalysts are available in two series: VK-WSA and VK-WSX.
In my opinion, it should be a process of physical absorption; initially, acidifying the catalyst when driving is done to provide it with a favorable, mild acidic environment. In other words, a small amount of acid is first allowed to adsorb on the surface of the catalyst, so that the catalyst can adapt to an acidic environment and thus function more effectively as a catalyst later on. The ultimate goal is still to protect the catalyst.
