During inspection, red spots (about 1cm X 1cm) were found in the middle of several converter tubes. From the outside, the tubes appeared dark red, while the small spots were blood red and brighter than the tubes. Has anyone encountered this situation before? Is this normal? Need an analysis?
If it’s not a widespread mottling pattern, it’s likely due to the catalyst carrier being bridged; while a widespread mottling pattern is caused by carbon deposition, coking, or fragmentation
It might be the color resulting from insulation material sticking to the furnace tube.
The main concern is whether there is damage to the furnace tubes; if it’s due to the reasons mentioned above, then there’s no need to worry
Use a temperature gun to measure the temperature of the furnace tube, check the pressure drop across it, and make a comprehensive assessment
Catalyst poisoning is generally caused by poisons such as sulfur, chlorine, and arsenic; it usually starts in the upper part of the furnace tubes. The poisoning is typically widespread, affecting multiple furnace tubes rather than just individual ones. Catalyst fouling is mainly caused by fluctuations in operating conditions and changes in raw materials, especially fluctuations in the water-to-carbon ratio. This is manifested as mottled patterns and red-colored tubes in the furnace tubes; in most cases, such mottled patterns and red coloring are not present throughout the entire system, but only in certain areas or specific furnace tubes. If it is caused by carbon buildup, it is recommended to first measure the hot spot temperature and compare it with that of other furnace tubes to see if it is higher. It’s the direction that I’m sure will be focused on in future production
When a new unit starts operating, this phenomenon (bridging) occurs, but it gradually disappears over time. In cases where the issue is widespread, it is possible to use a wooden hammer to tap on the furnace tubes from time to time; this can be effective. . .
The analysis on the 3rd floor makes sense; check whether high-temperature radiation coating has been applied to the fire-facing side of the radiation lining
The catalyst may be bridged or clogged; make sure the furnace tubes don’t overheat. Take the time to reinstall the catalyst when possible
