Dear sea friends, can anyone explain the function of the ribs on the heat exchanger gasket?

This is not a rib of the gasket; it’s part of the gasket. Single-pass gaskets don’t have any ribs – they are just a ring: lol
This is done to allow the material to make several more passes through the heat exchanger. If both end caps are removed, you can compare the two gaskets to see that it is intended for the material to make more passes
What the poster is referring to is probably gaskets; the sealing gaskets on the tube sheets of multi-tube systems are of that type, and they are used to enhance the sealing effect.

I understand that the so-called ribs in the heat exchanger gaskets, as mentioned by the original poster, serve to seal the gap between the head partition and the corresponding tube sheet; once sealed, this prevents the medium from leaking out sideways and ensures that it flows entirely through the tube bundle. Without this rib seal, a small amount of the medium would bypass the heat exchanger and flow away without undergoing heat exchange. If there are few sections in the tube bank, then not having those ribs actually won’t have much impact on the heat exchange efficiency.
