I’ve heard that calcium carbide is widely used in the PVC industry. What are its main functions, and what is the process for using it?
It’s not as simple as just having a wide range of uses. Calcium carbide can be used to produce acetylene, which is then used to manufacture vinyl chloride and subsequently PVC; this is one of the production routes.

Since acetylene contains unsaturated triple bonds, it can also be used in the production of acetaldehyde and acetic acid; It is also a basic raw material for polymers such as benzene, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers.
