It seems that the principles of chemical engineering weren’t studied properly. In fixed-bed gasification, coal moves downward while gas moves upward. If the coal becomes pulverized, its porosity decreases, which increases the resistance to gas flow. This can lead to issues such as channeling and wall flow, as well as an increased amount of coal powder being carried away; in severe cases, it can even cause the installation to stop operating.
