A large amount of water is poured on the coal before it enters the boiler hopper. I know this to be the case, but I don’t understand why. I hope someone with more knowledge can explain it to me.

The moisture content in coal can delay the ignition of coal seams; however, when there is too little moisture in the coal, especially in coal that contains a high amount of powder, adding an appropriate amount of water can improve the efficiency of combustion. Because adding water to dry coal enables the powder particles to bind together, making it less likely for them to be blown away or spill out, thereby reducing fly ash and spillage losses. At the same time, the evaporation of water loosens the coal seam, allowing air to penetrate easily into all parts of it. For coals with strong cohesion, adding an appropriate amount of water can prevent the coal seam from coking excessively. Furthermore, adding water can control the rate of volatilization, which helps to reduce losses due to incomplete chemical combustion. However, an increase in moisture content raises the flue gas losses of the boiler; therefore, the amount of water added should not be excessive, it must be added evenly, and a certain penetration time should be allowed.
I want to know too. After watering, doesn’t this increase the water vapor content in the flue gas? Doesn’t that result in greater heat loss from the boiler’s exhaust gases? Solve!
