What will happen if, during the shutdown of the CLAUS sulfur recovery unit, the exhaust gas from the catcher is diverted through the exhaust gas bypass line, resulting in heavy smoke emission from the chimney? How should it be handled?
Isn’t shutting down the plant meant to remove sulfur? Be more specific – did the reactor catch fire?
After the exhaust gases are routed through the crossover line, large amounts of substances containing SO2, H2S, and gaseous sulfur enter the incinerator directly. Upon combustion, these substances turn into SO2, which is then emitted through the chimney, resulting in smoke emission from the chimney. This is also the problem that typically arises when sulfur recovery units have to be shut down. The question is how to coordinate things properly in order to minimize the time during which the chimney emits smoke.
