The cylinder head cover was opened to check the piston top clearance, and it was within normal limits. The bearing shells where the crankshaft connects to the cylinder bores were also replaced, but the noise persists. I suspect it might be related to the clearance in the crosshead slideways; however, there is noise at both the first and second stages. It’s unlikely that there could be problems at both ends simultaneously. Could it be that the main shaft is not perpendicular to the two pistons? The vibrations, as measured with a vibration meter, are around 1 mm/s. Currently, only two of the spindle bearings are not moving – could it be a problem with those spindle bearings?
You can check whether the cylinder liner has an excessive gap or is loose
I don’t know which manufacturer the original poster’s machine is from? We have encountered a similar situation: there was no noise at all when the machine was not under load, but once it was under load, there were knocking sounds inside the cylinder. We checked the transmission components repeatedly and found no problems; it turned out that the cylinder liner in place was loose. After tightening it and adding shims, everything worked properly again.

What is a cylinder liner? Is there another sleeve inside the cylinder block? I didn’t look closely; I’ll take a look in a bit
Between the cylinder liner and the cylinder head, it is possible to measure the gap first; if the gap is too large, add shims to the copper gasket on the cylinder head

Yesterday, I removed the large wheel to check the concentricity of the couplings; the radial displacement was 0.14, and the axial gap was 0.095. However, I didn’t dare make any changes – the motor is too large, and I was afraid it might shift out of place and not be able to be put back in place. After heating the piston rod inside the piston body for 1 hour, the screws tightened by 60 degrees; I suspect this is the cause. I’ll try running the machine today to see the results
