The problem now is that the material becomes more prone to crumbling shortly after it gets soaked in water. The manufacturer claims that this desulfurizing agent maintains high strength before absorbing hydrogen sulfide, so it can be soaked in large amounts of water without issue; however, once it has absorbed hydrogen sulfide, its strength decreases and it becomes more likely to crumble.
