A temperature of not less than 1250 degrees is required for ammonia burning, while over 1400 degrees is necessary to ensure the lining can withstand such temperatures (the so-called reaction is actually the most important factor).

The furnace temperature should be maintained within the range of 1250 to 1400 degrees. The requirement to keep it above 1250 degrees is based on considerations related to ammonia combustion, in order to prevent the formation of ammonium salts in subsequent stages, as well as to avoid excessive levels of nitrogen oxides being emitted from the chimney of the sulfur recovery unit. Even in the absence of the requirement to burn ammonia, a temperature of over 1100 is required, mainly to reduce the formation of carbonyl sulfide. The limit of 1400 is determined, on the one hand, by the requirements of the lining; although such linings can withstand temperatures up to 1600. On the other hand, there is no need to exceed 1400, as the acidic gases in refineries come from solvent regeneration and acid water stripping. Unless an oxygen-enriched or pure oxygen process is used, the temperature generally does not exceed 1400. Raising the furnace temperature further would result in significant consumption of fuel gas.
