As the title suggests, what are the considerations during the design and construction process of adding new units as part of technical upgrades in existing production facilities? Which projects require a construction plan to be prepared in advance?
Generally, a feasibility analysis of the technical improvement project is carried out first to determine the overall plan for the modifications; if no major changes to production capacity or process routes are required, design and construction can proceed directly. During the construction phase, I generally assess aspects such as investment, schedule, quality, and safety. The specific construction plan is prepared by the construction contractor, which is then reviewed by our team, who also develop supervision plans. For the new unit, there is a series of safety and environmental assessment procedures to be carried out in the initial stage. During construction, care must be taken to ensure proper integration with the existing unit, as well as to avoid any interference from the existing unit’s pipelines, cables, and utility systems that could affect its safe operation
When setting up a practice space in a small space, every aspect needs to be taken into consideration.
Currently, during the production line renovation, the focus on-site is on the processes of sealing, purging, and replacing existing material pipelines, as well as handling tasks related to hot work, temporary electricity supply, and protection at edge openings. On a larger scale, there is also the issue of cross-work between different construction parties. Project duration, cost, quality, and safety – safety comes first, schedule and cost come second; quality is acceptable as long as it’s decent. That’s how most projects are handled: lol:lol
Be sure not to create devices whose diagrams are only meant for draftsmen or construction workers from installation companies; the piping diagrams prepared by the design office must always be reviewed by technical personnel with many years of experience in design and installation. The piping layout in the horizontal and vertical planes for the control valve assembly prepared by the design institute happens to be located in the core extraction area of the heater; there are no lifting points or space available. Now the tube bundle inside is leaking, and it’s necessary to carry out extensive dismantling work using fire to extract the tube bundle, which is a real headache. It’s not a system under my responsibility, but I went to the site to take a look. Under no circumstances should students who have just started working be assigned responsibility for plant process design and equipment layout, nor should postgraduate students.
As a supplementary note, if the project is large-scale, additional approval processes are required, including project submission for approval, design reviews, safety assessments, environmental impact evaluations, site layout reviews, and applications for a construction permit. It’s considered quite efficient to obtain the construction permit within 3 months!
