What are the consequences of using only shims and no flat shims when installing a new pump?
Flat shims and wedge shims are both used to level the machine base; they are installed near the foundation bolts. As long as they are secure and the base is leveled, no specific fixing requirements apply, and in many cases they are welded in place after being placed there
The rules for using shims are not fixed either; they can be chosen based on the installation environment of the equipment and its own weight. There are many types of shims, including adjustment shims, shock-absorbing shims, diagonal shims, and flat shims. Flat shims can only increase the height of the equipment slightly, while diagonal shims facilitate leveling, alignment, and stabilization of the equipment. However, shims must be used for equipment installation, and no more than 5 shims per set are allowed
At least one flat washer should be placed at the bottom; if there is no flat washer, the set of inclined washers can be placed directly on the concrete surface. But how can you adjust the inclined washers in that case? It is not possible to strike the exposed end of the shim; this may result in the shim and the pump base making only line contact rather than surface contact, which makes the installation unstable. Even though the shims are spot-welded, it is still possible that everything seems fine during alignment, but unevenness appears as soon as grouting is applied. Generally, a maximum of 2 flat shims and one set of inclined shims can be used; the height gap between the lower surface of the pump base and the concrete surface of the foundation should be between 25–70 mm. No more than 4 shims should be used, as too many shims can cause a \"spring effect\". For details, refer to the SH3538 specification for comprehensive explanations.
