The mechanical seal on the pump used for adding activated carbon to wastewater treatment (not dry powder) keeps failing; I’d like to switch to a different type of pump. I’m not sure which type would work better. Thank you.

Depending on the operating conditions, a diaphragm pump is the most ideal option when there are particles present; in the event of wear, it’s only the inlet and outlet check valves that are affected, resulting in low maintenance costs. Centrifugal pumps can only be used effectively with external flushing of the double mechanical seals; otherwise, replacing the seals is a real hassle. Even for dual-machine seals, high-hardness materials such as tungsten carbide or ceramics are required; otherwise, they won’t be able to withstand the pressure. Additionally, the external flushing pressure must not be too low to ensure that the flushing water does not leak inward. Otherwise, the graphite ring will deteriorate quickly.

There are particles felt, and using a mechanical seal is only a temporary solution. Our facility has two catalyst feed pumps that contain 0.5% solid particles; these pumps start to leak internally after about a quarter of a year, as solid particles accumulate in the dead zones at the static and dynamic rings on the medium side, resulting in a loss of compensation on that side (P53A)
Mechanical diaphragm pumps available on the market can achieve a pressure of up to 12 kilograms, but this is the limit, and such pumps are imported; Hydraulic diaphragm pumps can handle pressures of 0-170 kilograms, and they are capable of dealing with small particles. Due to the presence of rubber and plastic components, it is recommended that the temperature remain below 80°C, with a maximum of 110°C. Hydraulic diaphragm pumps are relatively expensive.
For large particles, use a single-screw feeder; for small particles, use a double-screw feeder, and then proceed with gas transportation; If the distance is short, there are no bends, and there is no pressure at the feeding point, a screw feeder can be used for direct addition
