The difference between single-stage pumps and multi-stage pumps. With the advancement of technological processes, various types of water pumps have been developed and are widely used. Some friends are not familiar with single-stage pumps and vertical multi-stage pumps. Today, I will introduce to you the differences between single-stage pumps and multi-stage pumps. A single-stage pump is a pump that has only one impeller, with a head of 125 meters only; a multi-stage pump is a pump that has two or more impellers, and its head can exceed 125 meters. Compared to single-stage pumps, multi-stage pumps differ in that they have two or more impellers, which allow them to pump and draw water in multiple stages. This enables them to achieve very high head pressures, thus lifting water to great heights. The head pressure can be adjusted by changing the number of impeller stages in the pump, according to the desired requirements. Multistage pumps come in two types: vertical multistage pumps and horizontal multistage pumps. These pumps achieve suction, discharge, and compression through changes in the volume of their pump chambers. Due to their inherent characteristics, multistage pumps require higher technical standards in terms of use, design, maintenance, and repair compared to single-stage centrifugal pumps. Multi-stage pumps are primarily used for supplying water as fire pumps in cities and factories, as well as for drainage in mines. They are also employed in industries such as petrochemicals, firefighting, chemicals, power generation, and construction. In terms of agricultural irrigation, it is only suitable for lifting water in high mountainous areas with low flow rates and high head pressures, in order to address the difficulties in providing drinking water for humans and livestock. When choosing between the two types of pumps, we can take into account factors such as pump price and floor area to decide whether to opt for a single-stage pump or a multi-stage pump. Generally, multi-stage pumps are more expensive than single-stage pumps. With technological advancements, pumps with single-stage impellers can increase their head by raising the pump’s rotational speed, thus replacing multi-stage pumps; of course, the cost also increases.
