Heiyoushan is an outcrop of Triassic oil, consisting of a cluster of tar mounds formed by the continuous seepage of crude oil; the largest of these mounds is 13 meters high and covers an area of 0.2 square kilometers. The oil at Heiyoushan is of high value, being a type of low-viscosity oil. As early as 200 million years ago, Black Oil Mountain began to leak oil. This black Liqing Mountain, along with the oil buried beneath it, has lay dormant here for hundreds of millions of years. Due to crustal movements, the oil underground, under the influence of stratigraphic pressure, seeps continuously toward the surface along rock fissures. The lighter components of the oil evaporate, leaving a viscous liquid that combines with sand to form piles of black oil.
Heiyoushan is located two kilometers northeast of the Karamay city center; from a distance, it appears to be just an unremarkable black hill. To appreciate Heiyu Mountain, one must get close to it in order to truly understand its beauty. On hot summer days, when one climbs Black Oil Mountain, one can see that along the stone steps leading to the summit, there are areas of uneven terrain stretching back and forth, resembling a honeycomb. In some areas, the ground has melted under the scorching sun; stepping on it feels sticky and soft, as if each step is taken on a sponge. On this large piece of black sponge, there are oil springs from which crude oil gushes out; for billions of years, they have been spewing oil bubbles forth just like mountain springs. At this moment, if you stand on a high place and look around, those oil springs, under the light of the sun, all turn into dark, shiny pearls. On sunny and breezy days, each oil pool resembles a mirror of varying sizes; “Sunlight, clouds, shadows, and black oil-covered hills – it seems as though the heavens have spilled ink from their inkstones,” and this truly seems to be the best description for them. Suddenly, a breeze blew, causing wrinkles to appear on the smooth surface; at that moment, your shadow in the oil pool was also blown around. It’s fun to take pictures by the pool; when the shutter is pressed, two versions of you appear in the frame – one of you standing by the pool, and the other being your reflection in the water.
