Wanhua Chemical’s 800,000-ton/year MDI upgrade project and 180,000-ton/year hexamethylenediamine project in Ningbo have been declared completed

The total investment for this project is 941 million yuan, of which 77.7 million yuan is allocated to environmental protection measures. The main components of the construction include: the establishment of a new plant for producing modified MDI at a capacity of 280,000 tons per year, and a new plant for producing hexamethylenediamine at a capacity of 180,000 tons per year； Revamp the existing Phase 1 and Phase 2 MDI plants, upgrade the existing gas generation units, and expand the hydrochlorination plants, etc. After the project was implemented, the company’s MDI production capacity increased from 1.5 million tons per year to 1.8 million tons per year (the first unit was expanded from 500,000 t/a to 600,000 t/a, and the second unit was expanded from 1 million t/a to 1.2 million t/a) ； The production capacity of modified MDI increased from 20,000 tons per year to 300,000 tons per year ； An additional production capacity of 180,000 tons per year for hexamethylenediamine has been added. Construction of this project began in September 2022, and it was completed and put into commission in April 2024. At present, except for the chlorohydrin production facility which has not yet been expanded, all other facilities have been completed; this inspection is a preliminary one. Among them, crude MDI is further processed through a separation unit to produce various grades of products such as PM, MDI-50, MDI-100, and high-viscosity PM. Modified MDI is primarily obtained by reacting MDI with polyether polyols to produce end-isocyanates with a urethane structure; the reaction equation is: MDI + polyether + additives → modified MDI. Adipic amine is produced by low-pressure hydrogenation, using adiponitrile (ADN) as the main raw material.

The MDI/HDI capacity expansion and upgrade integrated project: It is reported that the total investment for this project amounts to 3,230 million yuan, of which 209.9 million yuan is allocated to environmental protection measures. The main components of the project include upgrading the existing MDI plants in phases one and two, constructing a new HDI plant with an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons, upgrading the existing gas generation facilities, building a new formaldehyde plant with an annual production capacity of 240,000 tons, and constructing two new hydrochloric acid plants with an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons each. At present, one 120,000-ton/year chlorohydrin production unit has been completed; another 120,000-ton/year chlorohydrin production unit was not built as part of this project, and all the remaining units have been constructed. This inspection is a comprehensive inspection of the entire facility. After the implementation of the project, the company’s MDI production capacity increased from 1.2 million tons per year to 1.5 million tons per year (the first unit’s capacity was raised from 400,000 tons per year to 500,000 tons per year, while the second unit’s capacity was increased from 800,000 tons per year to 1 million tons per year), and its HDI production capacity rose from 50,000 tons per year to 100,000 tons per year. Construction of this project began in March 2022 and was completed in April 2024. The company reapplied for a pollution discharge permit in April 2024, and commissioning started at the end of the same month. During the commissioning period, all facilities operated normally; the environmental protection facilities were also put into use and have been functioning stably ever since.
