The power for the pneumatic control valve is provided by instrument air. The electrical signal from the DCS is converted into a pneumatic signal (pressure change), allowing the control valve to assume different opening degrees. Pneumatic on-off valves work the same way; they have only an open and a closed state. Generally, in front of more important pneumatic valves, an instrument air pressure storage tank is installed to prevent sudden interruptions in the supply of instrument air and resulting insufficient pressure.
It’s probably a compressed air storage tank for instruments. I’ve never seen ball tanks used for compressed air. It is mainly used for pressure regulation, as backup air compressors are often installed in process systems. When one compressor stops operating and another starts up, such a storage tank is needed to regulate the pressure in the pipelines leading to the instruments, so as not to disrupt the normal operation of the system.
