Question: When producing alkyd resins using the solvent method, nitrogen is used for protection during the process and again to remove the solvent at the end – what purity level is required for the nitrogen used?
Is a purity level of 99.5% or higher the preferred standard for the nitrogen used?
Purity is an important technical parameter for nitrogen. According to national standards, nitrogen is classified into three grades: industrial nitrogen, pure nitrogen, and high-purity nitrogen, with purities of 99.5% (O2≤0.5%), 99.99% (O2≤0.01%), and 99.999% (O2≤0.001%) respectively.

Reducing the oxidation of alkyd resins is cost-effective using 99.9% nitrogen.
It is recommended that the purity of nitrogen be above 99.9%, but I have a client who uses a process similar to yours, and for them a purity level of just over 99% is sufficient.
