New Method for Plugging Acid Leaks in Sulfuric Acid Plants (I) Field of Technology: A novel welding and patching method for plugging leaks, applicable to cases of concentrated acid leakage in metal pipes and tower walls within sulfuric acid production areas. (II) Background Technology In the industrial production of sulfuric acid, due to the strong corrosiveness of concentrated sulfuric acid, metal components such as pipes for transporting concentrated acid and tower walls are prone to corrosion, which can lead to leaks of concentrated acid. Due to the presence of concentrated acids and acidic sludge, it is often impossible to directly address these leakage points without shutting down the system. At present, most sulfuric acid plants in the country are facing this problem: either the system is shut down for welding repairs, or it operates with leaks. System shutdown for welding repairs will affect the system’s operational efficiency; operating with leaks will accelerate equipment corrosion, and it also poses safety risks. Therefore, the leakage of concentrated acid is an important factor limiting the operational efficiency of sulfuric acid production systems, and it is a common problem faced by all sulfuric acid manufacturers today. (III) Content of the invention The objective of this utility model is to overcome the shortcomings and deficiencies present in the existing technologies mentioned above, and to provide a new type of welding repair method that is simple to use, easy to operate, and highly effective. The objective of this practical new design is achieved through the following technical solutions: A section of channel steel 10 cm in length is taken, a hole is drilled in its center and an M16 nut is welded there. Depending on the shape of the leak, a steel plate about 2–3 mm thick is selected; an M18 nut is welded to the back side of this steel plate, while a layer of expanded PTFE about 5–10 mm thick is attached to the other side of the plate. The hole in the center of the channel steel is aligned with the leak site, and the steel plate is welded around the area where the leak occurs. (IV) Description of the drawings (V) Specific implementation plan: Since there is no concentrated acid or acidic sludge around the leakage point, welding can be used for repair. After aligning the center of the channel steel with the leakage point and fixing it in place, take an M16 screw, insert it into the M16 nut on the channel steel, then align the top of the screw with the M18 nut on the steel plate and tighten it. Since the other side of the steel plate is made of expanded PTFE, which possesses good elasticity and acid resistance, the expanded PTFE seals any leakage points under the force exerted by the screw.
There’s no need to go to such trouble. Weld two bolts on either side of the leak point, then make two holes in a steel plate. Wind the gasket into a disc shape, wrap it with Teflon tape, and place it under the steel plate. Pass the steel plate through the two bolts and tighten the screws. If you’re worried it might leak again over time, weld an additional square box outside to cover the leaky area.
