I would like to ask the experts: does a thermostatic steam trap allow flow when the temperature is low, and only permit water to pass while preventing steam from passing when the temperature is high? If I apply compressed air (around 1 bar) to the steam trap at low temperatures, will it get damaged over time?

In practice, when the drainage temperature is reached, there is no steam present, and it is necessary to remove air. This actually has nothing to do with water, steam, or gas itself, but only with their temperatures. Actual work experience: 1. For pipelines with steam tracing, as long as they are in normal operation, the traps rarely get clogged. But if it is stopped, cools down, and then put back into use, especially after being emptied, many impurities will be stirred up, which may lead to clogging of the filter screen in front of the strainer. ——This isn’t just a problem related to steam heating; it’s also a matter of common sense in daily life. When the fresh water supply at home is interrupted (mainly due to emptying of the tank), and the supply is restored, the water will be yellow at first. 2. As for cleaning the lines at the start of operation, there’s no need to discuss it further; under normal circumstances, it’s hardly necessary to worry about potential damage to the trap, as the main concern is blockages, and thus there’s no need to purge the trap in such situations.
