When performing verification, should a rounded standard value be used for the tower diameter? Is it considered an error if some values are no longer within the reasonable range after rounding? Where can I find the operating load performance chart for the tower?
Rounding is generally required, and the diameter after rounding must be checked to determine whether it meets the requirements and falls within the range of values suggested by certain formulas.
For structured packing, once the data is obtained from Aspen, there is no more data to enter in CUP-TOWER. The designed tower diameters are 0.40 and 0.37; only the empty tower velocity is slightly higher, reaching three, while all other values remain within the range typical of filler properties. However, after considering margin rounding and setting the tower diameter to 0.5, several values such as the liquid holdup deviate from the reasonable range, while the empty tower gas velocity decreases but remains above 2. I wonder if it’s because the filler was not chosen properly. Currently, the regular packing M500Y is being used; when trying to switch to M250Y packing, it was found that after rounding the dimensions, many of the values deviated from the acceptable range, and the gas velocity in the empty tower became too high.

If the results are not satisfactory, corresponding adjustments must be made, taking into account all the parameters that need to be altered. The process continues until the test results meet the requirements, at which point a decision can be made. This is essentially an iterative approach. It must be convenient to have software for calculations. You can try changing the filler specification; as long as it meets the process requirements, it is reasonable.
Only some of the data are not within the recommended range, as the tower diameter is too small. The conventional standard tower diameter is too large for this tower; in other words, it’s necessary to choose an unsuitable diameter for it. In such a case, can the conditions inside the tower be adjusted to a more ideal state by changing the type of packing?
Theoretically, it should be possible; you can do the calculation.
