The client wants to make modifications; a ring of pipe racks is planned to be welded around the corner steel on the top of the existing storage tank, so as to support the fire hoses. Is this feasible without emptying the medium inside the tank?
According to the poster’s description, the tank must contain flammable substances, and there will definitely be volatile gases at the top of the tank. Welding work cannot be carried out until the substances in the tank have been removed.
I don’t quite agree with your view, 1. Please distinguish between combustible and flammable.2 The large water curtains are all rooted on the outer wall 3. Other equipment (including pressure vessels) can also have welds made on them, but this requires written approval from the designer; if it affects the equipment’s functionality – for example, due to corrosive substances inside the vessel, which causes local changes in the structure – or if the equipment has undergone post-weld heat treatment, then the designer will not approve such actions.
It seems that welding cannot be carried out unless the medium inside the tank has been emptied.
It’s not that welded modifications cannot be carried out on equipment that is still in use; rather, if there are flammable or explosive substances inside the container, welding from the outside is extremely dangerous as it can easily lead to fires or explosions, and this is not permitted by safety procedures.
Oh, if the tank is emptied, can the support be welded to the edge flange steel?
