I’d like to ask fellow sailors about the relationship between the balance disk and the thrust bearing. Recently I read a post in which some people said that the balance disk is there to protect the thrust bearing, while others claimed it’s the thrust bearing that protects the balance disk! Solve! ! !
It’s all to protect the rotor and balance the axial forces!
The axial force is balanced by the balance disk, and the remaining axial force is taken up by the thrust bearings; there is no situation where one component protects another.
Following this logic, does the thrust bearing come into play only when the balance disc loses its function? If the balance disc cannot counteract the axial force, does that mean the balance disc is worn out?
Yes, but there must be a relationship between the two; both are used to balance bearing forces. So under what conditions does the balance disk operate, and under what conditions does the thrust disk operate? If there is no connection between them, then there is no need for a thrust disc; a balance disc can be used instead.
The axial force on the rotor cannot be completely balanced; a certain amount of it must be absorbed by the thrust bearings in order to ensure stable operation of the rotor, otherwise the rotor will shift. In the past, some multi-stage pumps did not have thrust bearings; the rotor could move freely, but this made it easy for the balance disk to get damaged, as the conditions under which the balance disk operated were much worse than those of the bearings. Lubrication was inadequate, and the contact between the balance disk and the balance plates was not as good as that in the bearings. The free movement of the rotor could easily cause wear on the balance disk. By installing thrust bearings, the movement of the rotor is restricted, and these bearings can handle any unbalanced axial forces. Moreover, the clearance in these bearings is usually smaller than the amount by which the rotor can move forward, so even if the bearings are damaged, the rotor is less likely to rub against the stator

The balance disk is used to balance the axial force, but if there is still a residual axial force, it is then the thrust disk and thrust bearings that come into play to compensate for it. At the same time, the position of the thrust bearing is also a means to adjust the balance disk clearance. When the balance disk is properly balanced, the load on the thrust bearings is much lower. If the balancing is not proper, the load on the thrust bearings increases, which can lead to bearing damage and overheating. This in turn causes an imbalance in the axial forces. After the bearings are damaged, it is easy for the balance disk and rotor components to wear out as well, resulting in pump damage
