I seek advice from experts: Our company has a chiller, and due to a reduction in the production load, the following method is used to save electricity – the temperature of the brine solution is lowered to -10 degrees, after which the machine is shut down manually; it is then restarted manually once the temperature rises to 0 degrees. In this way, it needs to be started and stopped once a day. Is doing this harmful to the chiller? Thank you!
There is definitely some damage; no engine set is suitable for frequent starting and stopping (except in special circumstances)
The chiller can also have its load adjusted; why not adjust the chiller’s load to keep the temperature as close as possible to the upper limit acceptable for the process? The motors of ice makers are relatively large, and frequent starting is not good.
Thank you all! I thought the same, but our boss said it’s fine as long as it’s not started frequently in a short period of time. I work in production and am not very familiar with power units; I rely on intuition. For such a large device, turning it on and off manually once a day simply doesn’t seem like a feasible solution.

It might seem like savings at first, but if the units are turned on frequently and then get damaged, repairs will require capital investment. Moreover, the lack of spare parts for one of those units will disrupt production, and the boss will hold you accountable. After all, you’re the expert – the management only provides direction, while you are responsible for making the technical decisions.
