What are the requirements for pressure drop in long-distance transmission pipelines? What are the criteria?
There are no specific requirements for this; it should be a balance between investment costs and operating expenses. Of course, there are some empirical values for the long-distance transport of gases and liquids, and decisions should be made based on these empirical values
There are specific methods for this; for example, in the case of the West-to-East Gas Pipeline Project, there are dedicated calculations and investment estimates
For gas pipelines, taking natural gas as an example, for distances of several thousand kilometers, a comparison of various options is certainly carried out based on the flow rate, the location of pressure boosting stations, as well as the pipe diameter and material； For main pipelines spanning several hundred kilometers without pressure boosting stations, the key considerations are flow rate, pipe diameter, and material; it is sufficient as long as the pressure meets the requirements of each distribution station. For distances of several dozen kilometers, it is sufficient to ensure that the flow rate meets the requirements and that the end points are satisfied; the quality of the pipes doesn’t matter much, especially given the current low prices of steel.
