What does a process engineer need to look at on-site?

I currently work in a design institute in the process engineering field. I’ve been in this industry for only a short time; I have been to construction sites, but I’m not sure what exactly needs to be checked there. I would appreciate some guidance from those who are more experienced in this area.
Looking at the things on the drawings in person during regular work must be beneficial, right?
It is necessary to examine the currently operating equipment and processes at least, so that improvements can be made to the design later on.
