The batch control software for the Yokogawa CENTUM VP system offers powerful functional capabilities. I have achieved good results in applying it to projects involving PVC, PPVC, etc. The batch processing functions, the batch control programs written using SEBO statements in SFC, as well as the nested use of sequential control and SFC for batch control, are all integrated seamlessly. However, there is very little discussion on this topic on this website; even concepts such as batch control, recipe management, and batch reporting are not clearly explained. It would be useful to have more discussions on such issues, starting with the basic concepts and progressing step by step.
I personally tried to study the batch processing related materials from Yokogawa, but I felt it was very different from ordinary chemical process control; after studying it for some time, I still couldn’t master it. It is said that within Yokogawa itself, there are only a handful of people who are capable of handling batch control well.

DCS manufacturers that have batch control capabilities can handle such processes. In these production methods, the manufacturing process remains similar, and by changing the raw materials or the temperature and pressure of the reaction, different products can be produced. This is also the key aspect, namely the formula. Batch control mainly consists of recipes, overall procedures, and unit procedures. In my opinion, the most important factor for effective batch control is that process engineers have a thorough understanding of the production processes. Many DCS manufacturers are capable of handling the configuration aspects; however, I’ve seen many cases where batch control programs were not properly implemented, and the fault was attributed to the DCS system. In reality, the real reason lies in the fact that process engineers do not have a clear understanding of the processes and their detailed steps. If one has a thorough grasp of the production processes and knows every detail involved, then batch control involves DCS technicians using configuration and computer languages to automate these processes.

I’ve never used Yokogawa’s. I have used Emerson’s central control systems, as well as those from Siemens and Honeywell. Overall, I find Emerson’s batch control systems to be more user-friendly and powerful. To do things well, it is necessary to use materials of precise quality in the manufacturing process, and to keep making adjustments and improvements in order to achieve high efficiency and automation. Actually, several companies can do it.
