Recently, Nanjing Dunxian Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. won the contract for supplying 8 sets of isothermal shift reactors for the project aimed at producing 2.4 million tons per year of high-quality coal-based ethylene glycol for use in fiber production, carried out by Xinjiang Hengyi Energy Technology (Turpan) Co., Ltd. The coal-to-textile integration project in Turpan, Xinjiang, is being invested in and built by Zhejiang Hengyi Group, a company ranked among the world’s top 500 enterprises. It is planned to invest 150 billion yuan in Turpan over the next 5 to 8 years in order to create a vertically integrated industrial cluster for \"coal–ethylene glycol–polyester new materials\". The first phase of this project, with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million tons of high-quality fiber-grade ethylene glycol produced from coal, is currently the largest such project in the world in terms of scale. The total investment is expected to be 25.7 billion yuan, the construction period will be 3 years, and operation is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2028. Using lignite from the local Ayding Lake mining area as raw material, this project adopts internationally advanced gasification and syngas-based ethylene glycol production technologies, and includes complete facilities for gasification, purification, and ethylene glycol production. Once operational, it will be able to produce 2.4 million tons of high-quality ethylene glycol per year, while also generating 76,000 tons of industrial-grade DMC, 15,600 tons of ethanol, and 37,000 tons of sulfur as by-products. By integrating low-carbon technologies such as CCS for carbon capture and storage, green electricity utilization, and circular economy, efforts are made to facilitate the transformation of coal from a traditional fuel into high-value chemical raw materials, thereby creating a high-end, green, and integrated industrial chain that goes from a piece of coal to two threads and then to a piece of fabric. The 8 sets of isothermal shift reactors that have been awarded in this bid will utilize the DX-V type controllably heat-transferred (isothermal) shift reactor, which was independently developed by Nanjing Dunxian. Through the innovative \"water-mediated isothermal reaction\" approach, this technology takes advantage of the large amount of heat absorbed during water phase changes to promptly remove the high temperature generated by the conversion reaction from the catalyst bed. It offers significant advantages such as uniform gas distribution, high CO conversion efficiency, and balanced bed temperature, while also effectively extending the service life of the catalyst. Dunxian from Nanjing’s successful bid to supply the core equipment for Xinjiang Hengyi’s world’s largest single-unit ethylene glycol project marks a new level in their cooperation.
