Nozzle orientation

Solid cone nozzle, facing the issue; this device serves a gas-washing purpose. The gas enters from top to bottom, while the liquid ejected by the nozzle – in our company we make it be ejected from bottom to top. Is there any scientific basis for doing this? Or are there any standard regulations?
What are the pressures of the gas and liquid phases? Conical nozzles are generally not used in scrubber towers.
