(1) The gauge does not pass; (it cannot be screwed in) the pitch diameter of the thread is too large, resulting in a non-conforming product. (2) If the stop gauge passes, the mean diameter is too small, and the product is unqualified. (3) The go gauge can rotate freely at any position on the thread, while the stop gauge needs to be turned one to two or three turns – sometimes perhaps one or two more turns as well – before it can no longer be turned; at that point it indicates that the diameter of the external thread being inspected falls within the \"tolerance range\", meaning it is a qualified product.
