Hello, dear sea friends! Recently, while working on a chlorine liquefaction unit, I encountered a difficulty; I would appreciate everyone’s advice! The liquid chlorine storage tank designed by the design institute for our chlorine liquefaction plant is located 25 meters away from the liquefier and separator. Upon inquiry, the design institute explained that according to regulations, liquid chlorine storage facilities must be situated at least 50 meters away from areas with dense populations, and at least 25 meters away from places where people frequently come and go! Liquid chlorine storage tanks must be double-walled! I asked: How can liquid chlorine be transported over such a long distance? The design institute stated that it is possible to enlarge the straight-line pipeline from the separator to the liquid chlorine outlet, or to add an intermediate buffer tank and then pump the liquid chlorine to the storage tank! I asked: Could we appropriately expand the intermediate storage tank for liquid chlorine without using a liquid chlorine warehouse? The design institute states that the intermediate storage tank must not hold more than one day’s and one night’s worth of liquid chlorine! I would be extremely grateful if you could offer some advice on the design here!
If current regulations require this, it is likely that all chlor-alkali companies will have to stop operations for rectification. If you don’t mention such standards, no one will know they exist

What is the usage amount for one day and night? There are no specific regulations for this; it can only be determined based on the company’s different manufacturing processes and production capacity. The intermediate warehouse is used to store materials needed at any time during production. Its storage capacity should not be too large; it only needs to suffice for one day’s worth of production. This ensures that production is not disrupted while minimizing potential risks.

They essentially constitute a single unit. Even if it is placed 100 meters away, an accident involving the liquid chlorine tank can occur; especially at night, it’s difficult to deal with such situations. If the amount of leakage is significant, people even hundreds of meters away can be poisoned. The key is to prevent leaks from occurring. With this design, the area from which liquid chlorine can leak increases, making it even less safe. This only takes into account the impact on personnel inside the plant; in reality, the main impact of a liquid chlorine leak is on people outside the plant. If the leak does not spread outside the factory area and the amount is small, people may be poisoned, but no deaths or serious injuries will occur; the operators can handle the situation promptly, so the hazard is minimal ; If the leak spreads outside the factory area and the amount of leakage is large, the damage can be severe; in such cases, this distance is completely ineffective. Large-scale leaks of liquid chlorine are mostly caused by the explosion of nitrogen trichloride or reactions between organic substances and liquid chlorine, and once a leak occurs, it becomes uncontrollable.
