Do you know? Today, the criteria for judging whether a chemical plant is excellent have changed. It’s not about who has the tallest chimney or the highest production volume; it’s about who is more frugal and saves more grain in production. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the State Administration for Market Regulation jointly released a list of energy efficiency \"leaders\" for 2025, which is equivalent to awarding titles of \"energy savings champions\" to companies in the chemical industry. Among the companies listed in the chemical industry, competition in the caustic soda sector is particularly notable. The list shows that the top three companies in terms of energy efficiency when producing liquid caustic using the ion-exchange membrane process are Qingdao Gulf Chemical, with an energy consumption of 284.71 kilograms of standard coal per ton ; Binhua Group, 285.24 ; And Wanhua Chemical (Ningbo), 285.72. Regarding the energy consumption figures of these three companies, the difference between the first and third place is only about 1 kilogram of standard coal, which is less than 0.3% of the total energy consumption. What does this mean? This means that the competition in terms of energy efficiency among top companies has turned into a close struggle, with the outcome often determined by the optimization of one or two key aspects in the production process, or by subtle differences in the second decimal place.
This is not a simple number game. For a basic chemical product like caustic soda, whose annual production is measured in tens of millions of tons, even if just 1 kilogram of standard coal can be saved per ton of product, the amount of energy saved and carbon emissions reduced on an industry-wide scale would be enormous. Therefore, this list is far more than just a roll of honor. It is an unmistakable signal: under the \"dual carbon\" goals, energy consumption is the hard currency, and efficiency is the lifeline. **In this way, a benchmark that the entire industry must strive to meet was set. Those who lead in energy efficiency receive not only honors but also a \"green pass\" for the future. Those companies with high energy consumption may face increasing pressure to transform or even survive. Therefore, when we look at the names of Qingdao Bay, Binhua, and Wanhua Chemical, along with their extremely similar figures, what we see is a silent but fiercely competitive race. What is at stake in these competitions is not only technology and management, but also the determination and speed of China’s transformation toward greener and higher-quality manufacturing. This is perhaps the change taking place in China’s industry: a shift from extensive competition based on tonnage to a more efficient competition focused on energy efficiency. The outcome of this competition will be a more efficient and cleaner future.
