When working at heights inside utility tunnels, a portable detector is carried by the supervisor (on the ground); it is taken to the high area for analysis every 2 hours, or it is worn by the workers at those heights for continuous monitoring.
In accordance with safety operation standards, portable alarms should be worn by workers working at heights to enable continuous monitoring. If the monitor is carried on the ground, it is not possible to detect changes in gas concentration at the work site in real time, and the intermittent analysis conducted every 2 hours creates safety gaps. Recommendation: In accordance with GB 30871-2022, for special operations such as work in confined spaces or at heights, continuous monitoring systems must be used; the alarm devices should be positioned at a height corresponding to the worker’s breathing level (approximately 1.5 meters). If there is a concern regarding the risk of falling from a height, the alarm device can be secured to the safety belt using an anti-fall rope. It is advisable to follow the operational procedures established by the company’s safety and environmental management department, and consulting a registered safety engineer may be necessary when needed. It’s better to take an extra step in terms of safety measures; never rely on luck.
