Chlorinated polyethylene CPE appears as a white powder; it is non-toxic and odorless. It possesses excellent weather resistance, ozone resistance, chemical resistance, and aging resistance. It also has good oil resistance, flame retardancy, and coloring properties, which makes it widely used in everyday life. Here are the three most common production methods for chlorinated polyethylene CPE: The production of CPE involves solvent chlorination, suspension chlorination, and solid-phase chlorination. At present, the suspension chlorination method has evolved into acid-phase chlorination processes, aqueous-phase suspension chlorination processes, and solution suspension chlorination processes ; The solid-phase suspension chlorination process is divided into the stirred-bed solid-phase chlorination process and the fluidized-bed solid-phase chlorination process. The fluidized bed solid-phase chlorination process overcomes the disadvantages of the solution method, solvent method, and solid-phase stirring method, making it the best choice for PE chlorination (especially for high-density PE chlorination). Advantages of this process: (1) It avoids the pollution and damage to the atmospheric ozone layer caused by solvents such as CCl4 in the solvent-based method, as well as the need for solvent recovery. It also eliminates the problems associated with the use of dilute hydrochloric acid in the water suspension method and the costs related to its treatment; furthermore, the hydrogen chloride by-product is absorbed to produce qualified hydrochloric acid for sale, thereby reducing production costs. (2) Chlorine and PE powder are in full contact, resulting in uniform reaction as well as fast mass and heat transfer. (3) The process is simple and requires low investment; in particular, it is quite easy to increase production capacity – simply by enlarging the diameter of the fluidized bed chlorination reactor. Moreover, the greater the capacity, the more significant the advantage of lower investment. (4) The fluidized bed process can be used for batch production as well as for continuous operation.
