In mid-February 2026, Donghua Energy (002221.SZ) disclosed significant progress on its investor interaction platform: the construction of its high-quality 10,000-ton T1000-grade carbon fiber production facility in Maoming is advancing steadily, with the first production line having entered the installation phase; operation is expected to begin by mid-2026. This is the company’s core strategic move to transition into the field of high-end new materials, following its leadership in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) technology. The successful progress of this project means that Donghua Energy will officially enter the carbon fiber sector, a industry valued at hundreds of billions and regarded as the \"king of new materials\". According to public information, the Donghua Energy Maoming carbon fiber project has a total investment of 3.737 billion yuan, and it is a key project that the company is developing within the zero-carbon industrial park. The project will be constructed in two phases, during which 4 flexible production lines will be built, ultimately achieving an annual production capacity of 8,000 tons of high-performance carbon fiber along with the corresponding polyacrylonitrile powder. In terms of the technical approach, the project utilizes an advanced two-step process involving aqueous phase precipitation polymerization and dry-spinning/wet-spinning. It is equipped with the longest continuous production line in the country, at 520 meters long, enabling full-scale production from the acrylic acid precursor to the final carbon fiber product. This integrated layout will enable the company to produce high-performance carbon fibers of the T800/T1000 grade, thus placing it among the top players in China’s carbon fiber manufacturing sector. Currently, the first production line of the project is in the installation phase, with operations expected to begin by mid-2026. In the zero-carbon industrial park of Maoming Binhai New Area, infrastructure such as the central control room and substation has already seen its construction completed, while the installation of the steel structure in the carbonization workshop is also nearing completion. 02 Technical breakthroughs: The significance of T1000-grade carbon fiber. What technical level does T1000-grade carbon fiber represent? Carbon fibers are classified into different grades based on their tensile strength. The T1000 grade is one of the highest-performance grades that can be produced industrially worldwide; it has a tensile strength of over 6.0 GPa and an elastic modulus of around 300 GPa. It is widely used in advanced fields such as aerospace, high-end equipment, and humanoid robots. For a long time, the production technology for carbon fiber at this level has been in the hands of a few international giants such as Japan’s Toray. Donghua Energy stated on the investor interaction platform that carbon fiber and composite materials possess excellent properties such as light weight, high temperature resistance, as well as high modulus and strength, and can be widely used in areas such as humanoid robots, aerospace, wind turbine blades, and lightweight automotive components. The company is currently focusing on developing the polymer composite materials industry, with high-end carbon fiber as its core component, and the Maoming project serves as the key element of this strategy. The carbon fiber team from the School of Materials at Shandong University provided technical support for the project using a two-step process of aqueous precipitation polymerization and dry spray-wet spinning, and participated in the establishment of the \"Carbon Fiber Research, Development, and Application Joint Laboratory\" as well as the \"**Carbon Fiber Collaborative Innovation Center\". The deep integration of industry, academia, and research provides strong support for technological breakthroughs in projects.
03 Application prospects: From humanoid robots to the industrialization of high-performance carbon fibers in aerospace, this represents a golden period marked by soaring demand from end-users. In the field of humanoid robots, weight reduction is key to improving mobility and endurance. Carbon fiber composites can be used in structural components such as robot arms, joints, and skeletons, allowing for a weight reduction of over 30% compared to aluminum alloys. With the accelerated rollout of products such as Tesla’s Optimus, humanoid robots are poised to become a new market worth hundreds of billions in value for carbon fiber. In the aerospace industry, the use of carbon fiber composites in aircraft structural components is continuing to increase. Donghua Energy had previously stated on interactive platforms that carbon fiber products can be used in fields such as aerospace. In the field of new energy, the trend toward larger wind turbine blades creates strong demand for carbon fiber, while components used in photovoltaic systems and hydrogen storage tanks are also accelerating the use of carbon fiber as a replacement material. Lightweighting of vehicles is also a significant driver for the growth of carbon fiber; carbon fiber composites have begun to enter the market for structural components in new energy vehicles. The company stated that efforts to develop downstream customers for carbon fiber are progressing in an orderly manner, and as these carbon fiber projects are implemented, they will have a positive impact on the company’s performance. 04 A Shift in Strategy: The Value Transition from \"Momentum\" to \"Materials\" For Donghua Energy, the carbon fiber project holds even greater strategic significance. The company began its operations in liquefied gas trading and propane dehydrogenation, and it is a leading enterprise in China’s PDH (propane dehydrogenation) sector. Four sets of PDH units can produce approximately 100,000 tons of high-purity hydrogen per year, thus establishing a stable hydrogen energy business. However, the polypropylene business, which is a downstream product of propylene, is highly affected by commodity cycles, resulting in significant fluctuations in performance. The carbon fiber project has established a closed-loop industrial chain from propylene to high-end materials – using propylene produced by PDH units as raw material, acrylonitrile is synthesized from it, and then carbon fiber is produced through polymerization and carbonization. This approach not only ensures self-sufficiency in raw materials, reducing production costs by approximately 120 million yuan per year, but also elevates the added value of the industrial chain from commodity-level products to high-end materials. The institution predicts that with the implementation of projects such as carbon fiber, the company’s net profit is expected to increase by 201.38% in 2026. The institution’s latest comprehensive target price is 14 yuan, indicating a potential upside of over 67% compared to the current stock price.
