Oil-containing wastewater is generally not accepted. It’s correct that electrodialysis-treated wastewater has a high salt content, and it’s also normal to have a small amount of oil in it; however, if the oil content is high, that’s a problem. If the oil-water separation isn’t effective, consider using demulsifiers, or check whether the interfacial tension is too low, or perhaps the electric field strength isn’t sufficient. We’ve encountered this issue before as well, and after making various adjustments, switching to demulsifiers resolved the problem

Take our case as an example: high salt content generally doesn’t cause any problems for sewage treatment plants, but if there’s a high oil content, then those plants simply can’t function. In my opinion, when it comes to wastewater treatment, COD is the key factor to consider; oil has a more significant impact on increasing COD compared to salt.
