Does the amount of crude oil processed affect the desalination efficiency of electrodialysis?

One of the key parameters for designing the size of an electrodialysis tank is the processing capacity. With the tank size fixed and the electric field arrangement unchanged, a lower processing capacity results in a slower upward flow of the oil inside the tank, an increased residence time, and thus better desalination effects. With a large processing volume, the oil flow speed increases, the residence time decreases, and the desalination efficiency deteriorates.

Currently, many refineries aim to improve efficiency by operating beyond the maximum processing capacity designed for the electrodialysis units. Such overoperation reduces the contact time between crude oil and water, shortens the mixing time as the mixture passes through the mixing valves, decreases the residence time of the emulsion in the electric field, and reduces the settling time of the crude oil.
