How to determine whether a heat exchanger leak is caused by a leak in the floating head cover or in the small floating head?
If the floating head cover (gasket) of the heat exchanger equipment leaks, minor leaks may cause smoking and oil dripping, while severe leaks can result in continuous oil leakage and even fires. Leakage from the small floating head (gasket) can be detected by the discoloration of the oil on the side with lower pressure. If it is a cooler, it can be determined by the oil present in the wastewater. For oil products with similar colors, sampling and analysis should be carried out for evaluation during heat exchange.
Leaks in the small floating head must be detected by performing a pressure test after removing the large cover; it’s also possible that there is a leak in the tube bundle

If there is a leak in the floating head cover, it will manifest as smoking or ignition (in the case of oils), or dripping or spraying of water (in the case of water), making it easy to detect; Leaks in small floating heads are generally very difficult to detect immediately. One of the oil-water heat exchangers in our installation was discovered only after the water treatment plant noticed oil contamination; in the case of oil-oil heat exchangers, it is possible to determine the issue by checking the color of the oil on the side with lower pressure.
