Reasons for the high ammonia nitrogen level in the water removed during electrodesalination

Purified water is used for electrodialysis water injection. Ammonia nitrogen levels in the water purified by the acidic water stripping unit are analyzed every shift and remain around 50; however, the ammonia nitrogen level in the water obtained through electrodialysis is around 160. No other additives besides demulsifiers are added before desalination. Could this be due to basic nitrogen present in the crude oil, or are there other reasons?

We have also measured the ammonia nitrogen in the cut water before, and it was 10–20 higher than that in the purified water; however, we have not encountered a level that is more than 100 higher yet.

We have encountered similar problems; the issue was usually a high nitrogen content in the naphtha. At that time, the main hypotheses were: 1. Additives； 2. Internal leakage in the side-line oil heat exchanger ； 3. Electrodesalination water injection ； 4. Crude oil components. Although the issue with the original poster’s device is water cutting, I don’t think the cause will be that much different
Electrodialysis should involve the addition of some alkaline reagents, right?
