The oils available on the market today are complex and varied; in an effort to maximize value, many oils that are not derived from petroleum have made their way onto the market, with chemical waste being commonly blended into them. Some time ago, I received a sample with the following parameters: Density: 0.7529 grams per milliliter. Boiling range: Initial boiling points at 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% – 50, 56, 54, 59, 62, 68, 85, 157, 193, 255 respectively. Sulfur content: 45 ppm; Nitrogen content: 1.9 ppm; Chlorine content: greater than 15,000 ppm; Silicon content: 2 ppm. Proper consideration wasn’t given during the processing of this sample, and as a result, the electrolytic cell kept malfunctioning for half an hour. Based on its boiling range, this oil sample does not conform to the normal distillation patterns of petroleum products. In normal petroleum distillation using the Enneberg method, the temperature gradually increases, and as the volume of liquid flowing out increases, the temperature variation remains consistent. This sample shows uneven temperature variations, which indicates that organic substances have been mixed in it. The problem is: what kind of waste chemical raw material has such a high chlorine content, with a distillation range within that of gasoline? Additionally, most chlorine-based compounds belong to the flame retardant category. If they were actually mixed into gasoline, how harmful would that be?

It might be plastic pyrolysis oil; this can be inferred from the extremely low nitrogen content and extremely high chlorine content, indicating that a large amount of PVC is mixed in the plastic. If such oil is not properly dechlorinated, it will cause problems in engines when used as vehicle fuel. A chlorine content of 1.5% is too high; moreover, if it’s organic chlorine, finding suitable catalysts for hydrogenation is difficult, and the cost of corrosion protection for the processing equipment would be quite high. It’s really hard to think of any other sources that could produce oil with such a high chlorine content (if it actually is oil). It must be something containing a large amount of organic chlorine. Apart from PVC, it could be some kind of organic material used in the chlorination process. This oil is a disaster for both businesses and consumers.
